HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO START A CLOTHING BRAND?

Inspiration Shopping

Inspiration shopping can be pricey, especially if you're buying luxury garments to source fabric swatches – we’re talking thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars.

To save money, consider secondhand shopping sites like eBay or using your own closet, cutting costs to just a few hundred dollars or even free.

GARMENT DESIGN

Hiring a designer can be expensive, especially if you're not clear about what you want.

To save money going back and forth on designs, start with flats. Essential for visualizing your design, it typically costs $5 to $35 per sketch.

Keep in mind the more revisions you make, the more it costs – so be clear in your communication.

TRY PRINT ON DEMAND

Prices range from $100 to $1,000 per design, depending on complexity.

Poorly made tech packs can waste thousands because not only are you paying for the tech pack, but also the bad sample made from it.

In my group coaching program I teach a method to create your own tech packs for free – no design, sewing, or drawing experience needed.

Tech Pack

Creating patterns and grading them for different sizes can range from $200 to $2,000 depending on complexity.

In the U.S., expect to pay around $250 minimum (for simple designs) per pattern and $40 per graded size. In India, costs drop to approximately $50 per pattern and $15 per graded size.

5

Fabric Sourcing

Sourcing materials like fabric, zippers, and buttons can cost $500 to $3,000 per style if you hire someone.

Learning to source yourself through courses like group coaching programs can save you thousands, with costs dropping to virtually zero.

6

Product Development Sampling

Plan to pay $200-$2,000 per design for sampling, depending on complexity.

Remember to budget for multiple samples, as revisions are likely.

Again, poor communication can increase costs with additional samples.

Print and Color Design

Creating custom prints costs $100-$500.

And, strike-offs to check colors and accuracy are anywhere from $15-$100.

Custom colors are cheaper than prints but still require lab dips ($15-$100).

Pro Tip: Using deadstock fabric for unique prints and colors can save hundreds or even thousands.

8

Bulk Fabric

Fabric costs vary widely depending on type and quantity ordered.

For small orders, fabric can cost up to $20+ per yard, while large bulk orders might lower costs to $1 per yard.

Specialty fabrics, like luxury fibers or new technology textiles, can be significantly more expensive, with luxury fibers reaching up to $40 per yard.

9

Cut and Sew

The cost of cut and sew varies depending on order size, location, and design complexity.

In Western cities like New York or London, expect to pay $40-$80 per garment for small orders (20 pieces).

In countries like India, costs are lower at $20-$40 per garment, but you'll also need to factor in shipping, customs, and duties.

As you scale and produce more, it makes more sense to move production overseas to save money.

10

Packaging, Labels, and Tags

Generic boxes with custom stickers are cost-effective, starting at $2 per box, and custom options can go as high as $15.

Labels and tags have high minimum order quantities (MOQs) of around 1,000 pieces per style, with costs varying between $0.05-$0.50 each, depending on materials, design complexity, and production location.

It’s ok to get 1,000 labels and tags, just save them for next season!

Quality Control

Quality control is crucial to ensure your products meet standards before shipping.

Hiring a third-party quality assurance team, especially for overseas factories, typically costs $300-$500 per day.

This investment helps prevent costly returns and maintains your brand's reputation.

Do NOT skip it.

Shipping and Logistics

Shipping and logistics costs can add up quickly when starting a clothing line.

For example, international shipping from Asia to the U.S. budget of around $7-$8 per unit, including duties.

Domestic manufacturing can reduce these costs significantly.

Additionally, consider the costs of shipping products to customers, boutiques, and online partners.

Efficient logistics management is essential to keep expenses in check.
